Becoming self-reliant is the real freedom: Vandana Bagri

Vandana Bagri is a social activist who is constantly working to make women self-reliant. Through 'Vikrant Education and Martial Arts Trust', she is not only training girls in yoga and self-defense, but is also spreading awareness against superstitions and social evils. Many projects are running under her leadership, which aim to empower women. Today, many girls are getting a new path because of social workers like Vandana Bagri. Her efforts are not only improving the condition of women, but are also starting a new era, where women are empowered, self-reliant and aware. Presented here is a detailed conversation with him.

Question: Vandana ji, how did you step into social work?

Vandana Bagri: My journey began with seeing the status of women in society. I saw that women are held back at many levels, be it education, self-defense, or economic independence. Often superstitions and social bondages hinder the progress of women. I decided to change this situation. With this thought in mind, I started working through Vikrant Education and Martial Arts Trust.

Question: Which projects are being worked on under your NGO?

Our NGO mainly works on three areas – education, self-defense and economic empowerment. Poor children are provided free education and tuition facilities. Special emphasis is laid on the education of girls. Career counseling is also provided to girls. Girls are given training in martial arts for self-defense.
Yoga and meditation are taught so that they become mentally and physically strong. Women are taught self-defense techniques to deal with eve-teasing and violence. They are encouraged to start their own business.

Question: What is the upcoming plan?

Soon a free sewing center will be started for girls, where they will be taught sewing, embroidery and other vocational skills. Women will be given information about savings schemes and insurance schemes.

Question: You said that superstition is the biggest hurdle in the progress of women. Please elaborate on this.

Vandana Bagri: Women have always been considered weak in society. Old beliefs, false stories and superstitions kept women suppressed. If a girl wanted to study, she was told that what will she do after studying, she has to get married anyway. If a woman wanted to become self-reliant, she was imprisoned within the four walls of the house. I think it is important to break these shackles. Everything should be tested with logic and discretion, it is not right to believe anything without thinking.

Question: What is your opinion on making women self-reliant?

Self-reliance is not just about being financially strong, but it is also about mental and physical strength. Women should learn self-defense techniques so that they can protect themselves. They should be aware of their rights and should know how to live with self-respect. We are working towards making girls self-reliant by providing them education, skill development and self-defense training.

Question: What would you like to appeal to the rest of the society?

I would like to tell all parents to give their daughters a chance to progress like their sons. To bring about a change in society, it is important that we change our thinking. We all have to work together to ensure that women get equal rights in every field.
